ARCHIVES AND INDICES
Interactive Fiction Archive
The FTP archive of shareware and freeware releases of programming languages, interactive fiction games, hints, and walkthroughs. Includes archives of posts from the newsgroups rec.games.int-fiction and rec.arts.int-fiction.
Interactive Fiction: rec.arts.int-fiction Online Archive
An online index of threads from the newsgroup rec.arts.int-fiction, containing posts from 1992 through 1997.. Site maintained by Stephen van Egmond.
Interactive Fiction Research Library
Another site assembled by Stephen van Egmond. This "research library" is for people who are interested in writing interactive fiction or studying it academically. It is built upon the rec.arts.int-fiction archive at the same site (see above).
I highly recommend this site. It has loads of helpful information. Of particular interest are a history of interactive fiction, and design guides for interactive fiction writers.
The ftp.gmd.de Interactive Index
This online index of the ftp.gmd.de archive site is maintained by Volker Blasius. The manager of the index, Stephen van Egmond, collects the index files Blasius and others write, and produces WWW pages for them. Van Egmond has also added a "feature" for showing reviews of particular files, although he admits that this section has been neglected.
http://www.wurb.com/if/index.html - Baf's Guide to the Interactive Fiction Archive
An index of text adventures in the archive, with capsule game reviews. Here site maintainer Carl Muckenhoupt attempts to guide the newcomer to the "good" games. For quick downloading, this site includes direct links to the games.
Although game rating is of course subjective, I find Muckenhoupt's reviews to be concise and generally fair-minded. He is observant of the most annoying aspects of some games, such as frequent character death, lack of imaginative plot, and poor spelling. The games are indexed by author, development system, genre, rating, etc. As of October 17, he had posted reviews up to April 1999. [
This site appears to be down. When I find out more about its status I will post the info. here.

Although
Snacky Pete's Text Adventure Archive
is rather outdated (it seems to have been untouched since January 1996) and only includes games which particularly interested the site designer, those games it does list are broken down into searchable categories (author, platform, etc.). Included are Pete's personal comments and descriptions of each games.

http://www.if-now.demon.co.uk/ - Interactive Fiction Now Magazine
Interactive Fiction Now (IFN) magazine is a free web-based magazine covering the latest Adventure Gaming news, reviews, previews and interviews. IFN Plus, IFN's sister magazine at the same WWW address, covers broader material, including non-adventure games and hardware peripheral reviews. Webzine edited by Matt Newsome. [

Society for the Promotion of Adventure Games (SPAG)
SPAG (The Society for the Promotion of Adventure Games) is designed primarily to keep the gaming public aware of text adventures on the market today. Most of the space is devoted to reviews. Since the number of such games is small, SPAG is published sporadically. SPAG was founded by G. Kevin "Whizzard" Wilson, and is currently edited by Paul O'Brian. [-
